EcoFriends Club is working hard to bring change to our local community.
A group of SMM students started an awareness campaign about the consequences of plastic on our environment. These students have been researching the impact plastic products have had on our oceans specifically.
- 500 million straws are used and thrown away in one day in the U.S. That is 127 school buses filled with plastic straws! Many of these straws end up in the ocean and are consumed by fish, marine mammals, sea turtles and seabirds.
- It is estimated by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
- 25% of fish sold in seafood markets around the world have plastic inside them.
The SMM EcoFriends Club has been going around the school encouraging students to use reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and containers. We all have the responsibility and power to stop plastic from polluting our ocean and contaminating our food chain.
Our EcoFriends Club met with the Everett City Council to consider a ban on single use plastic bags and straws in the City of Everett. The students also met mayor Cassie Franklin.
This incredible group of students also ran a public campaign at the YMCA in Mill Creek. They distributed the flyers to guest and to the local community as well.
