Counselor’s Corner

Hello! I am excited to be part of such a wonderful community that fosters academic growth and learning. I hold a degree in social work from George Fox University as well as a seal of biliteracy in Spanish from the state of Oregon. In my free time I enjoy thrifting, hiking, and exploring the city. Looking forward to a great school year!

I meet with each class once a week for forty-five minutes in a class called Guidance. In this class, we cover social and emotional topics, how to navigate interpersonal relationships, and strategies for managing emotional regulation. I also meet with students one-on-one by appointment only. At times, I may call in a student if a parent or teacher has requested an appointment on their behalf or if I observe them struggling with something that may require support.

In addition to this, I coordinate MAP testing and lead small group sessions in my office. These smaller groups focus on topics similar to those discussed in Guidance, but in a more personalized setting with a few students. In the coming weeks, I will be introducing Lunch with the Counselor for each grade level. This will offer students an informal opportunity to connect with me and their peers.

The best way to reach me is via email at krood@stmarym.org. When emailing, please include your first and last name, your child’s name, and your availability. Your child can also schedule an appointment with me by filling out a Counselor’s Request Form and placing it in the black box next to my office door.

This form is designed to help me better understand your student and support their success in school. Please fill it out to the best of your ability, providing as much detail as possible.

I will be starting Lunch Bunch small groups for each grade level section. I will rotate meetings through all grade level sections, seeing each section once every six weeks during lunch time. We will dive deeper into the class material that is presented in guidance each week through open discussion in a safe environment. We will particularly focus on topics such as friendship, emotional regulation, and how to succeed and thrive emotionally and socially at school. It is a wonderful place for students to share in a safe place, connect with their peers, and to chat about anything that is on their mind. If you would like your child to participate, please print and fill out the form attached below, and return it to your student’s teacher.
